Every generation of the Froelich program has been guided by the same question; will this decision still make sense ten or twenty years from now?
That mindset has shaped everything from breeding selections to how horses are used and sold. We would rather stay consistent than be popular, and we would rather preserve what works than reinvent ourselves to keep up.
The result is a program built on continuity, not constant change.
For more than four decades, much of the program’s continuity was guided by Kelly Froelich, whose steady leadership reinforced the values that still define the operation today.
Kelly believed deeply in work ethic, accountability, and treating people right. He often said,
“If you think you’ve worked hard enough, someone is working harder.”
He also believed that anyone who bought a Froelich horse became part of the family. That expectation — honesty, respect, and standing behind what we sell — remains central to our program.
Spanning more than 12,000 acres of working rangeland, the ranch operates as a multi-faceted agricultural enterprise, including raising quality beef cattle and our substantial equine program; a herd of 100 horses used for ranch work, breeding, and various equestrian activities.
Every great horse program begins with one stallion. For us, that's WR's Commanche Boy. This striking palomino carries ranch bloodlines as a grandson of Old Man by Old Sorrel who has the distinction of being described as the greatest cow horse on the King Ranch.
Matthias and Katherine Froelich settled here in 1928. The horse program started twenty years later, when their son John Froelich bred the first mares in 1948. The first foal was registered in 1949. Since 1959, there's been a registered foal every year.
Our horses are used in real ranch work and expected to handle real situations: long days horseback, cattle work, roping, and everyday riding. They are valued for their minds as much as their ability, and for their willingness as much as their talent.
Versatility, soundness, and attitude matter more to us than titles or promotion.
We believe a good horse is shaped long before training ever begins.
Disposition, correct conformation, and long-term soundness are influenced by breeding decisions, environment, and early development. Training can refine a horse, but it cannot replace what should be built into them from the start.
That belief guides every decision we make — from the bloodlines we preserve to how our horses are raised and represented.
